A Langley RCMP officer escaped serious injury when his black Mazda ghost car was struck by a dump truck in the intersection of Glover Road and 216 Street/Crush Crescent. The officer was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries. He was released a few hours later Cpl. Holly Marks said at the scene that his injuries are not believed to be serious. The passenger side airbag deployed; that side of the vehicle was badly damaged. Marks said that witnesses report that the police vehicle had stopped for the red light on 216 Street, facing west. When the light turned green, he proceeded into the intersection to head west when he was struck on the passenger side by the larger vehicle which was traveling south on Glover Road. The impact sent the Mazda spinning, coming to a rest almost facing the direction in which the officer had been driving. The rear of the car settling only inches away from the railway tracks and crossing arms. The dump truck, with a transfer box (pup), came to a stop in its lane, a few feet away from the intersection. “Twenty-five years driving and this is my first accident,” the driver, who would not give his name, told The Times. The mishap, which occurred at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, closed all routes to the intersection. The only traffic making it through was westbound 216 Street traffic which was allowed to cut through the Esso gas station parking lot to slip on to northbound Glover Road. Trains were also halted. The RCMP’s commercial safety inspection team was to test the brakes of the dump truck at the scene, Marks said. If necessary, a mechanical inspection will be carried out by ICARS, the Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstruction System. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.
