District of Sooke Mayor Wendal Milne and council are proud to host the official grand opening of the Sooke Public Boat Launch facility located on the harbour behind the Prestige Oceanfront Hotel on West Coast Road.
On Friday, Mar. 23, at 1 p.m., the mayor and council will welcome MP Wai Young on behalf of Minister Lynne Yelich, Western Economic Diversification and Minister Ida Chong, Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to unveil the plaque and cut the ribbon while a local sports fisherman will launch a boat during the opening of the facility.
The boat launch project was a joint venture with the federal, provincial and local government, the Prestige Oceanfront Hotel and local businesses. The launch facility is the new home for the Sooke Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The estimated cost of the boat launch was $1.84-million with $605,000 coming from the federal government Western Economic Diversification grant, $200,000 from the Prestige Hotel, $500,000 “in-kind” donation from the hotel and $300,000 (plus another $335,000) from the District of Sooke. The final costs for the boat launch have not yet been calculated.
