One in custody after Chilliwack bank robbery

Brett Penner accused of presenting a weapon to teller at Main Street bank getting away with cash

A male in his early 20s is in custody after a bank robbery downtown Chilliwack two weeks ago.

On Oct. 17 at approximately 11:45 a.m., RCMP report that a lone male entered a bank on Main Street, produced a weapon and demanded money from a teller.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

A responding RCMP officer observed a man matching the robber’s description, and after a short foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into police custody.

Brett Penner, born in 1996, is charged with one count of robbery and one count of willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

He remains in custody with his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 4.

In an unrelated case, Penner is facing one count of mischief $5,000 or under from an incident on June 10 in Chilliwack. He was due in court one day after the robbery for a Crown application to revoke his bail for the June 10 incident. That application is scheduled to go head on Oct. 28.
