Fraser Health has confirmed that one person has now died due to COVID-19 at Eden Care Centre in Chilliwack and there are now eight cases at the long-term care facility.
That’s up from five cases reported at the last update by Fraser Health on May 8.
The 89-year-old man passed away on May 5, according to his obituary “from complications arising from COVID-19.”
A spokesperson for the provincial government who shared the numbers with the Progress explained that data shared at the end of last week did not include the death because there “can be a lag in reporting a death, due to several reasons, including underlying causes.”
The outbreak at Eden Care is one of eight in Fraser Health long-term care or assisted living facilities in the region. The largest outbreak is at Dufferin Care Centre in Coquitlam where there are 22 confirmed cases and four total deaths. That outbreak dates back to March 20.
Worthington Pavilion in Abbotsford has seen seven confirmed cases, as of May 11, and no deaths.
The first case reported at Eden Care was on April 22.

B.C. has seen a total of 2,353 cases, of which, 1,719 people have recovered.
And despite some criticism on social media over the weekend about too many people being out and about in the hot weather, Henry said the vast majority were in small groups, sitting at proper distancing.
“We are not taking a punitive approach in this province and that has worked for us,” she said.
Given the low case count over the weekend, Henry added she “fully expects” the second phase of B.C.’s reopening to go ahead over the May long weekend.
