One of two men charged in the 2011 murder of Surrey teen Maple Batalia was granted bail on Friday (Jan. 11).
Gursimar Singh Bedi, 23, was arrested and charged Dec. 1 with manslaughter with a firearm and being an accessory after the fact in connection with Batalia’s shooting outside SFU Surrey in September 2011.
His bail hearing was held Friday in New Westminster Supreme Court, but details are subject to a publication ban.
Gurjinder (Gary) Dhaliwal, Batalia’s ex-boyfriend, was also charged with first-degree murder in relation to her death. He remains in custody.
Batalia, a 19-year-old student at the university, was gunned down in the Central City parkade following a late night of studying. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds in what police believe was a targeted attack, and died later in hospital.
A post on the RIP Maple Batalia Facebook page early Friday afternoon said “Very sad day for us …Gursimar Bedi … granted bail on several conditions but will not be released right away…”
Bedi and Dhaliwal are due to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on Jan. 25.
