Only one person spoke out against Cumberland’s proposed cannabis Zoning Bylaw Amendment at a public hearing on Wednesday.
The proposed zones where cannabis retail outlets will be permitted were amended to exclude Cumberland’s industrial areas.

Resident, Kate Greening, disagreed with Zoning Bylaw Amendment 1085, saying that it does not make sense to exclude industrial areas.
“It was in order to keep the retail store downtown, but you left it on the Trilogy property on the other side of the highway so I would like to know how that actually keeps it in the downtown core,” she said.
Manager of development services Ken Rogers said the zoning bylaw would allow for a cannabis retail store in commercial, mixed-use zones and interchange zones.
Greening also spoke out about the Temporary Use Permits, saying that a Development Permit would make more sense. She added that language should be kept consistent, including taking out the word marijuana completely in favour of cannabis and using retail store instead of dispensary.
However, at the beginning of the public hearing, Rogers outlined that the purpose of the hearing was to hear opinions on the zoning amendments, not business licenses or policy.
The third reading of the Cannabis Retail Regulation Changes is scheduled for the Aug. 13 council meeting.
