Staff at the Unisus International School in Summerland are making the last preparations for the private school’s inaugural year.
Around 50 students are expected to attend when the school opens its doors on Sept. 4.
Cindy Leung, operations director for the school, said the work on the classrooms has been completed with new paint and new carpet.
In the hallways, flooring is on back-order and will be installed around mid-September.
Furniture for the classrooms will arrive this week, in time for the new school year.
The school on Pierre Drive will follow the International Baccalaureate program when it opens its doors.
This year, it will have students from preschool to Grade 6, with most of the students from Summerland and Penticton.
In addition to the classrooms, the school also has a technology lab with equipment to teach coding, 3-D printing and other related skills.
“We’re building on the skills of the 21st century,” Leung said earlier. “Skill sets and mindsets are so important.”
She added that the design of the classrooms was done to allow flexibility and configuration for group discussions and collaboration projects.
While the school will initially accommodate students up to Grade 6, higher grades will be added in the coming years. The first graduating class is expected in the spring of 2022.
In the future, the school also plans to build a dormitory which will be able to accommodate up to 100 students.
The school is on the site of the former Glenfir School, a private school that operated from 1993 until 2011.
The facility, on a seven-hectare property, was built in 1996 and expanded in 2006.
The present building has an area of 3,700 square metres.
