A Vernon orchardist has harvested recognition from his peers.
On Thursday, Tom Ouchi was presented with the Golden Apple award by the B.C. Fruit Growers Association at a horticultural symposium in Kelowna.
“I’m honoured to have received it,” said Ouchi, who is a third generation grower in the Bella Vista area.
“There are a lot of good growers in the valley who deserve the award.”
The award recognizes outstanding production of fruit in 2010.
The Ouchi family farm started with vegetables in the 1920s but it shifted into apples in the 1950s.
Presently, Ringo-En Orchards grows 18 acres of ambrosia, gala, Spartan, Fuji, McIntosh, golden and aurora apples, as well as peaches.
Ouchi isn’t willing to take credit for the farm.
“I have very good workers involved,” he said.
“They are very diligent. I attribute most of my success to them.”
But while he is pleased with the award, Ouchi is struggling with the economic conditions facing orchardists.
For the third year, apple prices have plunged below the cost of production.
“I am just hoping for the best — that we can get out of this situation. I’m not sure if that’s possible,” said Ouchi.
Also on Thursday, Lake Country grower Tarsem Dhoot won the compact orchard award.
Dhoot operates 10.5 acres of ambrosia, gala and McIntosh apples.
