A persistent COVID-19 outbreak at an Abbotsford long-term care home has finally been declared over.
Fraser Health says there are now no active cases at Valhaven Home, a facility operated by Tabor Home Society. Nine people – three residents and six staff members – linked to the facility had contracted COVID-19, with one resident dying from coronavirus complications.
The outbreak had been first declared more than two months ago.
According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, “A COVID-19 outbreak is generally considered over when 28 days (two full incubation periods) have passed from the last date a person was exposed to the virus.”
Medical officials can, however, reduce or extend the time period needed to declare an outbreak over.
Tuesday brought good news not only for Valhaven residents and their families, but those who live in other care homes and their families. The province announced that it would soon be allowing in-person visits under strict conditions in long-term care homes.
