The painting of a temporary rainbow crosswalk downtown has been postponed.
The event was scheduled to take place this afternoon at 4 p.m. but the city has confirmed that the painting has been rescheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m.
The crosswalk, to be painted at 10th Avenue and Shoppers Row, is meant as a celebration of diversity and Campbell River’s Pride Festival which takes place on Saturday, June 24.
Ron Neufeld, deputy city manager, said the rainbow crosswalk is a form of public art meant to help brighten up the downtown core. As part of downtown revitalization efforts, the city is working on creating a policy to encourage more creative crosswalks.
“Council supports this installation and recognizes the value of art crosswalks. Like last year, this is a temporary rainbow crosswalk but council has directed staff to develop a policy to consider how more permanent crosswalk installations could be managed in future years,” Neufeld said. “The timing for this work will ensure that the crosswalk looks fantastic for the Pride celebrations on June 24.”
Pride festivities will take place between noon and 4 p.m. on June 24 in Spirit Square and all community members are invited to join the fun.
