Local advanced care paramedic Don Hagen has received the B.C. Ambulance Service Chief Operating Officer’s Commendation Award for outstanding professionalism and commitment to the paramedic profession.

The Chief Operating Officer Commendation Award is a provincial award granted to BCAS staff members who have made exemplary contributions that have province-wide benefit, and demonstrate both outstanding achievement and illustrate exceptional personal and professional qualities that serve as examples to other employees.

Hagen was one of four BCAS honourees who received a provincial award from a pool of 38 award winners in 2011.

The BCAS Employee Recognition Awards program gives formal recognition to individuals or teams for their exemplary contributions.

Nominations fall under three categories: Delivery of Patient Care or Client Service; Community Involvement and Leadership.

Each year individuals and teams are nominated by their colleagues; a committee reviews the nominations and then selects the award recipients.

Hagen, a resident of Vernon, has worked for BCAS for 28 years, mainly in Kelowna.

In addition to attending calls, Hagen is also a trainer, advanced care paramedic mentor, acting unit chief, acting district supervisor and regional training coordinator for the Justice Institute of B.C.
