Parksville council briefs: curling club liquor licence change approved

Memorial tree and three-way stop also discussed

  • May. 27, 2019 12:00 a.m.

Parksville council gave approval to the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) for a liquor primary structural change and a permanent liquor licence change at the Parksville Curling Club.

The club sought council’s permission and a resolution supporting their applications to the LCRB to permanently expand the lounge area authorized for serving liquor and alter the hours of operation.

The club’s hours will increase to permit liquor service between the hours of 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Three-way stop to be installed

Council reaffirmed a previous directive to install a three-way stop at the intersection of Northwest Bay Road and Franklin’s Gull Road.

According to a report by city acting director of engineering Joe Doxey, since the completion of the new Northwest Bay Road connection to Arbutus Road in 2018, council has brought forward a concern of traffic safety and conflict at the intersection. At the April 1 regular meeting, council directed staff to install a three-way stop sign device at the intersection of Northwest Bay Road and Franklin’s Gull Road as a high priority item.

Memorial tree honours son of ex-councillor

Council passed a motion to plant a memorial tree in the Community Park in honour of former Parksville councillor Leanne Salter’s son, Andrew, who recently passed away.

“I would like to put a motion forward tonight, but first let me inform you of what happened,” said Coun. Al Grier.

“Councillor Leanne Salter was a valued council member over the past four years and she recently lost her son, Andrew at an early age of 36.”

Recycling containers motion withdrawn

A notice of motion to investigate the costs and logistics for adding recycling containers next to existing garbage cans throughout the city was withdrawn.

Coun. Marilyn Wilson brought the original motion to investigate the costs for adding recycling containers at a regular meeting on May 6.

“I think I’d like to rescind this motion for now because we have so many other issues we’re dealing with on our strategy, our plan and as we eliminate a few things and make room for more issues perhaps we can add sustainable issues or arts and different things like that,” Wilson said.
