Watch your mail for a chance to help the community.
The Canada Post branches in Nanoose Bay, Parksville and Qualicum Beach are sending notices out today, asking people to leave food in their mail boxes.
“Any non-perishable food items or dry goods would be greatly appreciated,” said Cheryl Brucker.
All of the food will go directly to the local Salvation Army food bank to help each community.
“We are hoping to get a great response from the community by including Qualicum Beach and Nanoose Bay this year,” she said of Parksville’s previous efforts.
Food bank manager Trina Jiggins said they are at all-time lows of stocks of basic items like juice, crackers and canned meat.
She said they served 437 families in May and the number is growing steadily by 20-30 families a month, with a notable increase in people coming from — or who work in — Alberta.
“People often forget about the food bank in the summer because they relate it to the big Christmas push,” she said.
People are asked to leave non-perishable food in your community mailbox any time next week, June 20-24, and it will be picked up by Canada Post. Items can also be dropped off at the local post office branch, or the food bank in French Creek directly.
