Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz paused in the middle of a ground-breaking event to recognize the Humboldt tragedy on Tuesday at Twin Rinks.
The timing for the celebration of the new hockey arena was a little unfortunate.
“I want to take a few minutes,” Gaetz said. “I know this has been a very tough week for Humboldt. It’s been a tough week for our country, and it’s been really tough week for the hockey community.”
Since the tragic bus crash occurred, Chilliwack has been keeping the grieving hockey families in their hearts and prayers, she said.
“And we’ve been keeping our sticks out in front of our houses.
“You’ll see this afternoon when you go outside we brought 15 hockey sticks in commemoration of the young men who lost their lives,” she told the small group.
The sticks were lined up against the wall in a row outside Twin Rinks.
The council members and city staff also all wore green and yellow ribbons on their lapels at the ground-breaking to recognize the losses of the Humboldt Broncos and community.
“We are cheering the others on, and hoping for a speedy recovery and a recovery not only in their bodies but their souls and spirits as wells.”
