Pay hike considered for elected officials

Anyone elected to Spallumcheen council in November may get a pay hike.

Members of current council have instructed staff to review policies regarding financial remuneration for elected officials.

“Some of them have not been changed since 1997,” said Greg Betts, chief administrative officer.

No direction has been provided yet by staff, but one possible option is that remuneration be tied directly to the consumer price index.

“This would be for future councils and not for us,” said Mayor Janice Brown.

“We are trying to get everything ready for the next council.”

Current members of council have turned down salary increases for the last two years, but Brown insists it’s important for those individuals running in November’s municipal election to know about remuneration in advance.

“People will know that’s all they are getting,” she said.

Presently, the mayor receives $18,819 a year, while each of the six councillor
