Nanaimo Astronomy Society is inviting the public to come down to Maffeo Sutton Park to view Jupiter and its moons.
Jupiter is currently at its closest to the Earth as the planets make their journey around the sun, which means a pair of binoculars will show Jupiter and its four major moons, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto and Io, and the average telescope will reveal the planet’s colourful cloud bands.
Earth’s moon, just past its first quarter, is also brightening the night sky and adding some interesting viewing too and the Nanaimo Astronomy Society will have several telescopes set up at Maffeo Sutton Park Saturday, June 15 for a public viewing. Moon viewing will start at 7 p.m. and Jupiter viewing begins at 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.
