Mark your calendars. The Penticton Dragon Boat Festival is moving forward with plans to host its 20th annual event on Sept. 11 and 12.
“If B.C.’s ‘Return to Sport Restart 2.0’ and the provincial health officer’s restart plan continue to be as successful as they have been, we see no reason why we can’t deliver another awesome weekend of racing,” said Don Mulhall, the festival’s race director.
“Working with local officials and following the provincial health orders, our goal is to provide a safe and exciting event. We may have to modify things, but we hope to be the first of many great sporting events in Penticton in September.”
Despite hope they could hold the festival last September, in the end the races were cancelled.
The year 2019 was the last time a full festival took place on Skaha Lake.
From its start with only 12 teams to 80 registered teams in 2019 from all around B.C., the Penticton Dragon Boat Festival is a highly acclaimed event.
An economic impact study showed that the festival brings in more than $2 million to the local economy.
Earlier this week, Iron Man announced it would be going ahead this year in Penticton. That race was pushed back from its usual August date to Sept. 26 to better fit with the B.C. restart plan.
