This weekend Penticton firefighters will be trading hoses for spatulas at their annual charity pancake breakfast.

On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, starting at 7 a.m. and running until they run out (usually 10 or 11 a.m.), members of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1399 will be flipping flapjacks for a good cause.

One of their largest fundraisers of the year, crews set up at Gyro Park as part of the Peach City Beach Cruise with the union’s 1957 Ole No. 5, fully operational fire truck marking the spot.

For $7, customers will get pancakes, ham, bacon and beverages.

“We’re looking forward to a pretty good turn out. About 75 per cent of the department members end up playing a role in one way or another,” said firefighter Ben Grantham. “It’s usually one of our better turnouts of the year.

“The money we raise ends up going directly in the Penticton Fire Fighters Charitable Society and from there we disperse it to any number of, generally local, grants or funding requests, small fundraisers that we might be able to contribute to.”

At the end of the year, any of the money that is not given out locally goes to the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Association Burn Fund or Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

In past breakfast events, the crews have dished up as many as 800 morning meals, raising anywhere from $7,000 to $8,000.
