Penticton mail carriers ask dog owners to keep pets secured

Loose dogs have put mail carriers in danger and made physical distancing difficult

Penticton mail carriers are fed up with unruly canines.

Canada post employees are asking residents to ensure their furry friends are properly secured while mail carriers make deliveries.

“As Canada Post employees – your family members, neighbours, friends – continue to serve Penticton customers during this challenging time, we are also seeking your assistance to help keep our employees safe,” reads a new release from Canada Post.

An estimated 41 per cent of Canadian households have dogs. Too often, dogs can put mail carriers in unsafe positions where they run the risk of being bitten. Loose dogs have also made it difficult for mail carriers to adhere to physical distancing when owners need to retrieve their dogs.

“As much as we love our canine pets, they are protective of their home and their family, and it’s impossible for delivery agents to know how any dog will react when they approach your home to deliver the mail. Dog incidents can range from encounters with threatening dogs to being attacked and bitten,” said Canada Post’s news release.

Canada Post asks that dog owners refrain from opening the door during deliveries and do not allow dogs to approach carriers while they are out in the community. The postal service suggests keeping dogs in a separate room at the time of deliveries to them from approaching carriers.

“We know this is a difficult time and we appreciate your help in keeping our employees safe, which will also help keep our local communities safe.”
