Lake Cowichan Mayor Rod Peters announced at the last council meeting that he can see the end of the road for the town’s water treatment upgrade.

Dismayed at seeing months of inactivity without a conclusion for the expensive upgrade, Peters declared he would become “a burr under the saddle” of the engineers (Stantec Consulting) who’d been quarterbacking the project. He’s been constantly contacting the engineers, and asking for reports.

Stantec was scheduled to be in Lake Cowichan Sept. 19 to deal with deficiencies in the work.

“Paving starts Oct. 2 with a completion date of Oct. 8. Shaun Swarbrick will deal with the craneway for the sand and salt filtering system. A representative from Island Health will also be on the site with Shaun,” Peters said.

The mayor has been expressing concern since soon after being elected about when the system’s soda ash treatment would be working.

“The soda ash velodine machine is being shipped Oct. 8. The expected arrival date is Oct. 14. Shaun is currently looking for a firm to install the equipment as Tritech [the firm originally expected to do the job] is too expensive.

“Based on my discussion with Shaun the water treatment plant should be functioning by the end of October.”
