Mother says drivers are putting lives in danger when they go for coffee

An Abbotsford mother says she’s fed up with semi-truck drivers who “value their coffee more than other drivers’ lives.”

Jennifer Rowse has started an online petition calling on the Abbotsford Police to increase parking enforcement along Clearbrook Road near Highway 1, where she says big rigs are often parked while drivers go to the Tim Hortons.

“I drive to and from that area four times a day with my kids in the car and I can’t tell you how many close calls and accidents that I see there due to the semi trucks parking in the middle of the road,” Rowse wrote on the petition page, which had more than 100 signatures as of Thursday morning.

“That’s like me speeding because I’m late but I don’t care about others on the road because I have somewhere to be, it’s unacceptable and selfish.”

Sgt. Judy Bird acknowledged that the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has received complaints about trucks parked in the area. She said increased enforcement this past fall led to 19 charges, in addition to numerous verbal warnings.

Bird said the APD is also talking to the City of Abbotsford about possibly installing signage along Clearbrook Road telling drivers not to park and warning of potential fines. She said that approach seems to have improved another problem area along Sumas Way.

She said police haven’t recorded an increase in collisions in Clearbrook area but “that doesn’t mean we’re not concerned.”
