Picnic shelter approved

Seed money is being provided to ensure upgrades to Lavington’s Centennial Park move ahead.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee will provide $60,000 for a covered picnic shelter, with the Lavington Community Association also coming up with funds.

“They didn’t necessarily want everything on the list, like the storage building, all at once knowing the cost,” said director Jim Garlick of the club.

“If we can get this started to the point, where a concrete slab is poured, the association can go out and get donations. They can look at the overall cost and this will allow them to decrease it.”

GVAC staff had suggested a covered picnic shelter and a storage shed could cost $122,613.  The cost for just the picnic shelter is about $58,000.

Director Mike Macnabb doesn’t believe there is a need for the regional district to take on the entire project itself.

“We should not discount the time and talent a community can bring to a project,” he said.

“We’re here to serve the community, not the other way around.”

That view was supported by director Patrick Nicol.

“They want to do a lot of things themselves,” he said of the association providing funds, labour and material.
