Police briefs: Scams in all forms multiply in Oak Bay

Unidentified dog injured, wallet found, tree splits, new reserves

  • Jun. 11, 2018 12:00 a.m.

Scammers continue to target Oak Bay residents in a variety of forms.

On June 4 a resident reported that they received an email instructing them to purchase iTunes cards, scratch them for the activation code, and send photos of the cards.

Oak Bay police remind residents to be cautious of emails sent with directions to purchase items. Always check the source of any emails you receive as scammers are getting savvy with their methods to defraud people.

As Canada Revenue Agency scams continue, police remind residents the CRA does not seek funds through email or text.

On June 5 a resident reported a Telus scam via email. The email included a form asking for personal information. Police remind residents to contact any company directly that asks for personal information to ensure it is a legitimate source.

Police seek owner of unclaimed wallet

On June 9 a wallet was turned in after being located at Transit Road and Beach Drive. If you have lost a wallet in Oak Bay recently, please contact the OBPD at 250-592-2424 to see if we have it.

Tree splits in populated Fireman’s Park

On June 9 a large tree in Fireman’s Park split into two. Even though there were a lot of people in the park at the time, no one was injured. The Oak Bay Fire Department and public works will deal with its disposal.

Police seek owner dog injured Saturday

On June 9 an injured dog was taken to an animal hospital by an Oak Bay police officer. All attempts to locate the owner of the dog have been negative. If you have lost your dog, please contact the OBPD at 250-592-2424.

New faces on the street

On June 9 two new Oak Bay Reserve Constables graduated. Congratulations to R/Cst Carrie and R/Cst Deigh. The community is lucky to have the great team of reserve constables at OBPD who last year volunteered over 1200 hours of service.
