Police campaign targets boozing boaters

It will be like the RCMP’s counter-attack program, only on water.

This is how police are describing Operation Dry Water, three-day blitz running June 24-26. The purpose is to provide education and enforcement with a focus on  boating under the influence. The goal is to reduce accident-related fatalities in the Shuswap and Okanagan areas.

“Operation Dry Water patrols and boat ramp checks will be occurring on waterways all over the Okanagan/Shuswap, with two specific on-water media showcase events set for Kelowna and Sicamous,” says Kelowna RCMP media relations officer Const. Steve Holmes, who adds the checkpoint-style operation will be set up similar to an ICBC counter-attack campaign.

Holmes says that at least 40 per cent of boating fatalities and accidents involve alcohol. Impaired operation of a motorized vessel is an offence.
