Police, Conservation see busy long weekend

Despite warnings of zero tolerance for irresponsible and disruptive behaviour the RCMP and BC Conservation had a busy May long weekend at Terrace recreation sites.

Numerous people left local campgrounds with eviction orders and violation tickets following a joint enforcement initiative between the Terrace RCMP, BC Conservation Service and Kitimat RCMP on May 17 to 21. From a policing standpoint Terrace RCMP Staff Sergeant Michael Robinson said in a press release the weekend was considered to be very successful overall. “The enhanced presence allowed us to stay on top of problems, prevent them from getting worse, and provide families with a feeling of comfort knowing unsafe and irresponsible behaviour would not be tolerated around them.”

The joint-enforcement initiative primarily focused on the Lakelse Lake Furlong Bay Campground, as well as recreation sites in the West Kalum Forest Service Road area. As a result, multiple evictions occurred, liquor-related violation tickets were issued, and joint patrols were conducted on the waterways targeting a variety of Provincial and Federal statutes, including impaired boating

“Our message this weekend was clear: be safe, be responsible, and everyone will have a good time,” said S/Sgt. Robinson. “Members of the public can expect to see more joint enforcement initiatives taking place in the future to support the safety of our community.”
