Police investigate after man found dead in Oak Bay garage

No evidence of foul play in man's death; autopsy, toxicology report pending

Cooler temperatures may account for a man found dead in an Oak Bay, through the cause of death is undetermined.

Oak Bay Police were called to Yale Street shortly after 1 p.m. on Dec. 13 where the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered inside a garage under construction. It appeared he was using the partially completed garage as shelter over the weekend.

“There was no indication this young fellow had any history in Oak Bay whatsoever. There’s nothing to suggest why he was here and why he picked that building,” said Deputy Chief Kent Thom. “All indications were he was just looking for a place to stay for the night.”

Oak Bay does infrequently see those who lay down cardboard in underground parking areas or under bridges

“We haven’t seen a spike in that recently, it’s just very sporadic in the last few years,” Thom said.

The man, now identified by police, was known as having no fixed address. Police do not suspect foul play or risk to the community.

“The only odd part of this investigation was the age of the deceased. There was no sign of any violence,” Thom said. “There is an indication that there was some past involvement with the police regarding drugs.”

Cause of death has not been determined and the results of an autopsy and toxicology are pending.

“There’s not much more that we have at this point right now,” Thom said.

Saanich Police notified next of kin and continue the investigation, as they provide detective services to Oak Bay.
