A man was arrested after shots were fired near the Nanaimo RCMP detachment this morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept, 29, according to Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
“A lot of our members were going on shift when they heard, what they believed to be gunfire very close,” said O’Brien. “They started walking down the street on foot and [driving] in cars and they [suspected] it came from the 400 block of Prideaux Street. They got there, they found shotgun fire damage to a vehicle and then our dispatch received a report of a car that may have been associated to that incident.
“The description went out and one of the members saw the vehicle driving nearby, effected the stop and took the male driver into custody and in doing so located a loaded firearm beside him on the front passenger seat.”
O’Brien said there are no injuries that police know of and they don’t know why the shots were fired.
“We’re assuming it was a targeted incident and if there’s anything to lead us to believe that the public is any way at risk, we will let them know,” O’Brien said.
The man was in custody as of the early afternoon and no charges have been laid at this point, according to O’Brien.
