ON FEBRUARY 24, the New Hazelton RCMP received information of a male involved in trafficking cocaine at a liquor establishment in Hazelton. As a result of the information, an investigation was conducted where two plainclothes officers arrested the male for possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine.
The male was found with a quantity of cocaine in his pocket and later released on a court date of June 15th. The suspect is a 21 year old male who is from the Gitanmaax area and well known to police. The male’s name is not being released until charges are approved by Crown Counsel.
The New Hazelton RCMP are requesting the publics assistance in identifying individuals who are suspected of trafficking drugs. Anyone with information can contact the New Hazelton RCMP at 250-842-5244 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS where callers can remain anonymous.
On February 22nd, the New Hazelton RCMP received a complaint of a sand truck that had been stolen from the Gitanmaax Band Office and it was located a short time later on Highway 62 near the Hagwilget Bridge.
The vehicle is a white GMC bearing BC licence plate BY2324 and was suspected to have been stolen sometime over night. The vehicle was seized and towed to a compound where Forensic Identification Section examined the vehicle for fingerprints in an attempt to identify a suspect or suspects.
The investigation is still ongoing as of this date. Should anyone have any information on any suspects or witnesses to the theft of this vehicle then please contact the New Hazelton RCMP.
On February 23rd, the New Hazelton RCMP received a complaint of a theft of money from a residence in Gitsegukla. The complainant had followed the alleged suspect and contacted the police.
The complainant stated that nearly $400 was her bedroom and accounted for minutes before the suspect had entered the room and then the suspect was observed fleeing the room a few minutes later. The suspect is well known to police and was subsequently located with the complainant who provided the police with up to date locations while following him.
The suspect was arrested and the money was subsequently found hidden in the suspect’s shoe. The suspect admitted to stealing the money and it was returned to the complainant. The suspect is a male in his early 20s from the Gitanmaax area and was released on a future court date. The investigation into this matter is still ongoing.
On February 26th, the New Hazelton RCMP were conducting patrols of a local dance in New Hazelton. There were two males observed fighting in the parking lot next door and one male was identified as being heavily intoxicated.
As a result of the altercation and queries on one male it was determined he was on no alcohol conditions. The male was arrested for breaching his conditions and is a local resident from the New Hazelton area.
The male was held in custody until sober and later released on a future court date. The investigation with reference to the fight determined that the two males were known to each other and allegedly wrestling so no charges for fighting in a public place was pursued.
