A Ladysmith man was arrested after attempting to avoid a check stop on Jan. 11.

South Island Traffic Service was conducting a traffic safety check when police noticed a vehicle turn around before reaching the stop. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle.

The driver turned down a power line road covered in deep snow, causing the officers to call for police dog services.

The vehicle was stolen and was found abandoned down the road.

Officers followed footprints, later finding wet clothes and a backpack containing various tools.

A short time later, traffic service officers stopped a vehicle with a cold, wet passenger and determined he was the individual they were seeking.

The man is facing multiple charges including flight from police, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two counts of breach of undertaking and possession of break-in tools.
