Copper wire stolen

July 26 police were advised of a break and enter at a business in downtown Ashcroft. Some time between 1-1:45 am, suspects broke into a fenced compound and stole approximately $1,000 worth of copper wiring and cable. A white GMC van was linked to the crime.

On Aug. 4 the same compound was broken into again around 3:30 am and another $1,000 of copper wire was stolen by thieves who cut their way into the compound. This time a red Dodge Caravan with its license plates covered was implicated in the incident. Anyone having information on the crimes or the vehicles is asked to contact the RCMP at 250-453-2216.

Addicted to speed

July 29 at 4:22 pm Traffic Services pulled over a 2008 Infiniti G35 on Hwy 1 by Oregon Jack Hill for travelling at 149 kph in a 100 kph zone. The vehicle was impounded for seven days at the 21 year old North Vancouver man was given a ticket for excessive speed.

At 5 pm in the same area, officers pulled over a Harley Davidson motorcycle that was travelling at 149 kph in the 100 zone. The 50 year old Aldergrove man was given a ticket for excessive speed and his bike was impounded for seven days.

July 30 at 5 pm police pulled over a 2004 Accura TSX on Hwy 97 near 61 Mile for travelling at 147 kph in the 100 kph zone. The 34 year old Vancouver man was given a ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

At 7 pm officers pulled a vehicle over on Hwy 97 near Bullock Lake Rd., north of Clinton, after recording its speed at 145 kph in the 100 kph zone. The 21 year old 100 Mile House man was given a ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle, which belonged to his employer in Vernon, was impounded for seven days. He was also given a ticket for failing to display his N and he was served with an eight month driving prohibition as ordered by ICBC.

Impaired driving

July 30 at 4 pm Traffic Services pulled over a Ford Ranger on Hwy 1 by Collins Rd. in Cache Creek and noticed that the diver was showing signs of inebriation. The 40 year old Ashcroft woman Failed a roadside sobriety test. She was given a 90 day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Wheels impounded

Aug. 4 at 8:30 am police received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on Hwy 1 at Peterson (airport) Rd. Officers found a 43 year old woman sleeping in the backseat of the vehicle that she’d borrowed from a friend. The vehicle was uninsured and was impounded until the driver obtained insurance for it. She was given a ride to Cache Creek where she continued to hitchhike to the Lower Mainland.

Cow crossing

Aug. 4 at 11 am police received a complaint of eight to 10 cows on Hwy 97 at the south end of the Bonaparte Reserve. The owner was contacted and removed the cows.

Quick like a bunny

Aug. 4 at 6 pm Traffic Services stopped a vehicle leased by the Ministry of Forest Protection on Hwy 99 at Hat Creek Rd. for travelling at 130 kph in an 80 kph zone. The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the 55 year old Salmon Arm man was given a ticket for excessive speed. His supervisor was also notified.

Disappearing truck

Aug. 5 at 10:44 am police received a report of a stolen vehicle in the 16 Mile area. The 52 year old woman advised that her truck had been stolen, vandalized and returned some time overnight. Police spoke to the woman’s two sons who were sleeping in a trailer next to the truck at the time it was stolen. The 18 and 20 year old men had spent the night drinking in the trailer and denied taking the truck. The vehicle had significant front end damage, a tampered ignition, a broken shifter and the cab contained vomit and beer. The woman’s wallet and cell phone were left untouched. No charges have been laid.

Drugs seized

Aug. 6 at 11:30 pm Traffic Services stopped a 2007 Nissan Ultima in Lytton at Hwy 12 and Main St. and seized four grams of marijuana from the 33 year old Kelowna man. He was issued a 24 hour driving prohibition for driving under the influence.

Unexpected traffic

Aug. 7 at 11:47 am police attended a two-vehicle collision on Stage Rd. in Cache Creek where a 73 year old Cache Creek woman backing out of the Hungry Herbies’ parking lot struck another vehicle on Stage, driven by a 29 year old Lillooet woman. The Cache Creek woman was issued a violation ticket for driving in reverse while unsafe. Both vehicles sustained only minor damage.

Smoke inhalation

Aug. 7 at 8:25 pm Cache Creek Fire Dept. requested assistance from the RCMP with a mobile home fire in the Sage ‘n Sands trailer park. One of the trailer’s owners, a 57 year old woman, was pulled out of it by passers by and taken to the Ashcroft hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The trailer received smoke and water damage. The Fire Dept. is still investigating.

Floating away

Aug. 7 at 8:41 pm police received a report of missing floaters in the Thompson River. The complainant advised that her husband and his friends, all Ashcroft residents, had entered the river at Savona, intending to float all the way to Spences Bridge. She received a message from them at 4:15 pm saying they were passing through Ashcroft, but heard nothing from them afterward. The group was located in Spences Bridge shortly after the report was made.

Stern warning

Aug. 7 at 10 pm Traffic Services pulled over a pickup on Hwy 1 near Hyak Rafting and noticed that the driver showed signs of inebriation. The 24 year old Vancouver man blew a Warn on a roadside sobriety test and was given a three-day driving prohibition. His vehicle was towed.

Pulling up stakes

Aug. 8 at 11:43 am police were advised of a couple arguing on Hwy 1 by Wastech. Police located the 45 year old man and 51 year old woman, formerly of Yellowknife, who were moving to Osoyoos by hitchhiking with their possessions. Police determined that no assault had taken place and that the couple were simply frustrated about the lack of rides. They were allowed to go on their way, but are currently still trying to catch a ride on Hwy 1 east by Collins Rd. in Cache Creek.

Honest, officer

Aug. 8 at 5 pm police received a report of an eastbound erratic driver on Hwy 1 by Walhachin. The 33 year old Ashcroft man advised that the sports car was passing unsafely and driving at an unbelievable 200 kph. The report was forwarded to Kamloops but the vehicle was not located. Police would like to remind the public to be as accurate as possible when reporting erratic drivers, including a realistic estimate of their speed, and get their license plate number. The correct information helps identify the suspect both to police officers and to a court of law.

Animal call

Aug. 9 at 7:30 pm police dispatched an injured deer on Hwy 1 by Sage ‘n Sands trailer court in Cache Creek. The animal had been struck by a vehicle and left to die at the side of the road.

Rolling along

Aug. 9 police received a report of the theft of metal wagon wheel lawn ornament from a residence on the Ashcroft mesa. The wheel was returned by a neighbour the following day who found it in his yard, but police are still looking for suspects. Call the RCMP if you have information

Aug. 10 police received a complaint about a suspicious male who had been parked at the Husky for over 24 hours and was bothering customers. Police located the 73 year old man from Beaverlodge, Alberta and asked him to leave, which he did.

Faster than a…

Aug. 10 at 1:30 pm a Traffic Services member stopped a black SUV on Hwy 1 by the Red Hills rest area for travelling at 160 kph in the 100 kph zone. The vehicle, which was owned by the man’s company, was impounded for seven days and the 31 year old Lower Mainland male received a ticket for excessive speed.
