Trucks collide on road
Feb. 18 at 10:45 pm police attended a collision between two southbound trucks on Hwy 1 just south of the Red Hills Rest Stop after one truck rear-ended the truck in front that had suddenly slowed down. The first truck slowed after observing another semi truck in the ditch and quickly surmised that he was driving on a very slippery road. The first truck suffered extensive damage to the rear end and the female passenger was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Charges of driving too fast for road conditions are pending against the driver of the second truck, a 59 year old man from Willow River.
Earlier in the evening, a 2004 Peterbuilt semi with a trailer lost control on the icy highway and went into the ditch. The driver and passenger, concerned for their wellbeing on the icy highway, left the truck and walked to the rest area. The 27 year old Surrey driver and his female passenger were both suffering from whiplash and were transported by ambulance to Kamloops hospital.
No painting the town
Feb. 18 at 11:15 pm police attended a single vehicle accident in the same area after a northbound cube van went off the road and tipped into the ditch south of the Venables Valley Rd. The driver, a 26 year old North Vancouver man, was not injured but was concerned that his aerosol paint cargo might be a hazard to others. There was no problem with it and his vehicle was towed to safety.
Tracks leading nowhere
Feb. 19 at 7 am police attended to a report of vehicle tracks in the snow leading up to an embankment. The report was called in by a passerby who did not stop. Police investigated the scene on Hwy 97 C about 2 kms south of the Barnes Lake turnoff. They did see fresh vehicle tracks which indicated that a vehicle had driven off and then back on to the road. There was no vehicle either next to the embankment or at the bottom.
Plates stolen from truck
Feb. 19 at 3:30 pm police stopped a vehicle on Elm St. in Ashcroft that bore a stolen license plate. An investigation revealed that the truck’s owner, a 28 year old Ashcroft man, was unaware that his own plates had been stolen, and the single current plate used as a replacement. It had been stolen from a vehicle in Chilliwack. The Ashcroft reported his own plates as stolen.
Boy hit in parking lot
Feb. 20 police received a report of a pedestrian being stuck in the parking lot of the OK Stop the day before. A 25 year old Ashcroft woman reported that she and her six year old son were standing near the gas pumps around 3:30 pm when another vehicle drove up and struck the boy, knocking him to the ground. The boy was uninjured, and the matter is still under investigation.
Into the ditch
Feb. 22 police attended a single vehicle accident on Hwy 1 by the Red Hills Rest Stop after a northbound 2005 GMC Sierra pulling a flat deck drove off road across the oncoming lane and into the ditch. The driver, a 23 year old Abbotsford man, was taken to Ashcroft hospital complaining of back pain. There was no apparent damage to the truck or trailer, but they were towed for safety. Road conditions at the time were normal and dry, and it is suspected the driver nodded off for a moment.
Broken window
Feb. 23 at 4:30 pm police received a complaint by an Ashcroft homeowner that someone had thrown a stone at their front window and cracked it. A 27 year old male suspect was located. He admitted throwing the stone to try and get the owner’s attention. He said it was an accident and apologized and offered to pay for the damage.
Still driving
Feb. 24 at 12:50 pm, following up on a tip, a Traffic Services officer located and stopped a westbound vehicle on Hwy 1 east of Cache Creek by the Brookside Campground. The driver was found to be a prohibited driver. In fact, she was just returning home from Kamloops Provincial Court where she had been convicted of driving while prohibited on Jan. 10. For that conviction, Rhannon Cubbon, 36, of Ashcroft received a $650 fine and another 12 months of driving prohibition. She is now facing more charges of driving while prohibited. Her vehicle was impounded.
No keys, no ride
Feb. 24 at 10:30 pm police were called to the Oasis where a 30 year old Princeton man was causing a disturbance in the parking lot. The man had been drinking in the bar and went to get into his vehicle but became upset and frustrated when he couldn’t find his keys. He was arrested for causing a disturbance and lodged in cells until sober. His vehicle was towed.
