The last thing RCMP officers want to start the new year off with is delivering any tragic news. Which is why they will be out in full force tonight to keep the roads safe.
“We ask everyone to plan ahead, do not drink and drive,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.
RCMP will be up at Silver Star Mountain Resort, ensuring the family-friendly New Year’s Eve festivities can be safely enjoyed. Officers will also be out and about throughout the North Okanagan.
“As it’s in the middle of the week this year, we don’t anticipate as many parties or as big of parties as generally we do get on the weekends but we are prepared for it.”
With the advent of social media and texting, where people can share road check locations, RCMP officers now conduct mobile checks, where they pop up at various locations for shorter periods.
“It’s keeping people guessing,” said Molendyk.
The mobile road checks took three people off the road for alcohol-related driving infractions over the weekend.
In total last week, there were four three-day immediate roadside prohibitions issued, one seven-day, seven 90-day, one impaired and seven impounds.
“That’s an average week,” said Molendyk.
In an effort to keep the roads safe, drivers are reminded to plan ahead.
“We don’t want you to start off the new year with your vehicle being impounded, a large tow bill and a criminal charge.”
