Duncan Volunteer Fire department puts out fire near Silver Bridge

The Duncan Volunteer Fire Department put down a fire near the Silver Bridge over the Cowichan River on Thursday, Aug. 12 that the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say was the result of an arson.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. The fire was burning in brush between the river and the trail that runs under the Silver Bridge

Witnesses said they saw a man near the fire when it first started, and he fled the area, possibly on a bike, eastward in the direction of McKinstry Road and Rotary Park. The man was described as Caucasian, of average height with a slim build and curly blond hair, wearing shorts and no shirt.

“If there is someone who was out using the trails in this area at about 4:30 pm and noticed a male fleeing the area, any information may help us identify this male and prevent similar incidents,” said Cst. David Grey.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
