Surrey RCMP are appealing for dash-cam footage after a woman in her 20s was allegedly assaulted by a stranger in Newton on Jan. 3.
Police are looking for any footage taken between 5 and 6 a.m. on Jan. 3, in the 12500-block of 72nd Avenue.
Investigator’s believe the suspect may have been jogging in the area at the time of the assault.

According to Surrey RCMP, the male suspect is now believed to be between five feet to five feet six inches tall, and was wearing black shorts, a dark hoodie and white running shoes at the time of the occurrence, along with police’s previous description of the suspect having a beard and medium build.
Surrey RCMP say the woman was walking along 72nd Avenue “when she was grabbed from behind and bear hugged” in the 12500-block of 72nd Avenue around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 3.
The victim, according to RCMP, “screamed when the suspect covered her mouth with his hand.”
“The victim bit the suspect on the hand and freed herself from the suspect’s grip and ran away,” Surrey RCMP said in a news release.

Surrey RCMP also provided tips about personal safety precautions:
• Don’t take shorts. Use main routes, avoid lanes, forested or secluded areas.
• Walk in well-lit areas.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
• Don’t assist strangers.
• Trust your instincts and your feelings.
