Delta police rescued five of six ducklings found in a storm drain along Highway 17 on June 21, after receiving a call from a concerned citizen.
Due to the depth of the drains, the officers commandeered lacrosse sticks to reach the ducklings on Friday night.
Four of the ducklings were removed without issue and placed in a storage bin, the department wrote in a Facebook post.
However, two of the ducklings tried to escape from the lacrosse stick.
After a “brief foot pursuit” by the police canine unit and patrol officers, one of the rogue ducklings was recaptured and reunited with its siblings.
Unfortunately, the other duckling that tried to escape dove back into the storm drain and never resurfaced.

“A thorough rescue attempt was conducted but the duckling was never located and is presumed deceased,” the post said.
“Next of kin notifications were conducted with the 5 remaining siblings. Victim Services was declined.”
After “extensive patrols” for the mother duck proved unsuccessful, police transported the five surviving ducklings to the Delta Community Animal Shelter.
