The City of Nanaimo announced that its popular tree voucher program will return next week.
The municipality, in partnership with Green Thumb Garden Centre, is selling $20 tree vouchers that can be redeemed at the nursery for designated trees worth up to $75.
“Offering the tree voucher program is important in raising awareness about the value of trees in our city for cleaning our air, purifying our water and creating space for our wildlife to thrive,” said Rob Lawrance, city environmental planner, in a press release.
The vouchers will be sold at the city’s service and resource centre at 411 Dunsmuir St. during business hours starting Wednesday, Oct. 3. The vouchers are first-come, first-serve, with 150 available. Limit is two per property per year, and only for City of Nanaimo residents.
“A healthy urban forest canopy provides critical habitat for wildlife, reduces the impacts of global warming, provides storm water abatement, increases property values and helps define the character of the city…” said Patrick McIntosh, city urban forestry coordinator, in the press release. “Protecting our existing trees and planting new ones is one of the best things we can do for future generations.”
