The Port of Nanaimo is looking to connect job seekers with employers that do business on the waterfront.
The port authority is holding its second annual Port Connect event Nov. 7 at the cruise ship terminal.
“We want to link the marine-industry employers and possible employees, as there are tremendous opportunities for jobs that pay well,” said Donna Hais, port chairwoman, in a press release. “Last year we saw that people were excited to meet and discuss what the future could hold, so from that perspective, we felt that we had to hold Port Connect in 2019.”
The Port of Nanaimo is co-ordinating the event in partnership with Work B.C. Close to 20 exhibitors are slated to participate including B.C. Ferries, DP World, Seaspan, Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, Island Ferries, Helijet, Western Stevedoring, Tetra Tech, B.C. Vehicle Processing Centre, Canadian Coast Guard and more.
Peter McGee, job developer with Work B.C., said Port Connect isn’t necessarily a hiring fair, but an opportunity for job seekers and professionals to connect with the local marine sector in a unique way.
“We assembled key port partners within companies so candidates could engage in a conversation,” said Ian Marr, Port of Nanaimo CEO. “It was not like an interview, but more of an informal conversational setting, a networking style, which provided a way for both sides to ask questions they might not ask in a more formal setting.”
Port Connect is Thursday, Nov. 7, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at 100 Port Drive.
