Remembrance Day has passed for another year but the lessons learned by a students at Maple Bay Elementary will remain forever following a powerful project students took on to honour and give thanks to the sacrifices made by millions so that we can enjoy the freedoms that those sacrifices have afforded.

“This year at Maple Bay Elementary, they constructed a powerful installation, to pay their respects. Making the day more than remembrance, teachers turned their upcoming respectful time into an Applied Design Skills and Technology lesson with the help of Cowichan Careers and Trades Trolley,” explained SD79 spokesperson Mike Russell. “Each student was given the tools and help to construct their own cross that they could paint, decorate, and put personal messages on. One cut and two nails created this beautiful project.”

What’s more, a math lesson was then created to ensure the crosses were not haphazardly placed.

Students took time measuring and mapping the area so each cross could be placed with the care and attention it deserved, Russell said.

“The result was this amazing installation, which has had community members stopping to reflect, and students paying their respects in front of this powerful symbol of remembrance,” he said.
