Preliminary results from the City of Prince Rupert Go Plan Survey were released at the July 20 city council meeting and the numbers are expected to be crunched in the near term to realize what type of housing needed for the city.
City planner Zeno Krekic released the findings to council and the results showed that Prince Rupert citizens have a large desire to own their own home and property.
Forty-one per cent of residents in Rupert rent, while 59 per cent own their homes. Forty-two per cent of residents who expect to move in the next year cite wanting to own their home as the reason – the highest figure out of all reasons behind wanting to move.
Twenty-one per cent of Rupert residents expect to move in the next year, according to the survey, and five per cent of relocations have been due to landlords renovating their existing residences.
Among other notable figures, 37 per cent of residents use the public library, 77 per cent use public parks and 67 per cent attend organized community events.
Forty-two per cent of residents responded with having a very strong sense of belonging in the community, while 39 per cent say they have a somewhat strong sense of belonging in the community.
The results from the city’s secondary survey, a housing needs questionnaire, were not ready by Monday night.
