A Prince Rupert man was arrested following a local elementary school and nearby residents being told to stay inside while police searched for a suspect on April 28, after he escaped while being placed under arrest.

Tre Brody Burtram Spencer-Wilson, 26-years-old was wanted in relation to a December 2019 incident involving firearms and multiple outstanding warrants.

The incident started around 3:25 p.m. when a Prince Rupert police officer was forced to take evasive action to avoid a vehicle collision with a black pickup truck in the 100 block of 7th Ave E.

The vehicle stopped in the 400 block of the street when Burtram, who was a passenger in the vehicle, fled the scene. The suspect was later located near 8th Ave. and Green St. however, he fled once again, through neighbouring backyards after police attempted to arrest him.

“Additional resources including the Terrace Police Dog Service were called to the area. Several residents were asked to remain in their homes and nearby Lax Kxeen Elementary School was placed in a brief hold and secure while police worked in the area,” the RCMP stated in a media release, on May 3.

Spencer-Wilson was located hiding under a shed in the backyard of a residence after a 30-minute search in the 500 block of 7th Ave E. but before the Terrace Dog Team arrived. He fled for the third time and was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

Further to any initial charges and the outstanding warrants, Burtam has a new charge of obstructing a police officer.

“The Prince Rupert RCMP would like to thank residents for their assistance and cooperation as the tense situation unfolded,” the RCMP stated.
