Program allows for up to $5k for approved projects

Princeton Town Hall has already started receiving applications for money under the Business Facade Improvement Program, which was approved by council at its Jan. 18 meeting.

“This is money well-invested, in my opinion,” said Gary Schatz, director of economic development and tourism. “I think it’s a good way to support our businesses.”

Council has set aside $20,000 for business owners to spruce up their properties in the 2021 budget, which is pending third reading.

The program may grant funding up to 50 per cent of the total cost of eligible façade improvements, to a maximum of $5,000 per business. Projects must have a minimum total cost of $1,000.

Schatz said the initiative ties into other beautification projects spearheaded by the municipality including the addition of gateways, signage and the erection of bronze statues.

The idea, he said, is to create “a more hospitable environment” for visitors and residents.

Under its new policy, town council will decide which applicants receive funding.

All eligible improvements must be visible from a public right of way and may include exterior lighting and architectural features, windows, siding, painting, awnings, signage, landscaping and patios.

Paving, fencing and roof repair projects do not qualify.

The grants are only for businesses designated as Town Centre or Highway Commercial under the Official Community Plan.

According to the program guide “final grant approval will be considering the merit of the design and impact on the streetscape” for each application.
