How challenging is it to find daycare in Princeton?
That’s a question the municipality wants answered, and it will partner with the regional district to complete a childcare needs study for the area.
“This is a new thing for the community,” said Mayor Spencer Coyne in an interview with The Spotlight. “We’ve never (had a roll) in child care. It’s always been a provincial designation.”
Coyne said once the study is completed, the town will be in a position to apply for government grants to hopefully create childcare spaces.
The mayor believes there is a shortage of childcare options in Princeton, with only one daycare operator who has limited spaces.
Many parents rely on family members, or home daycare providers, in order to be able to work outside the home, he added.
With many residents are employed at Copper Mountain Mine and Weyerhaeuser, shift work requirements create unique needs, said Coyne.
“That’s a concern. It’s something I’ve been made aware of from people in the community.”
