Princeton town council is aiming to implement formal decisions made by council, rather than relying on informal procedures that over time can define the way the town is run.

Mayor Fred Thomas and councillors took part in a workshop held on Jan. 11 that outlined their role as town council.

From this meeting, council updated its appointment policy, a move that replaced Coun. Frank Armitage with Thomas as a Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen director.

“Council and staff have been inspired by our leadership session on governence roles and responsibilities,” said Thomas in a press release.

“The exercise was most beneficial and has left council eager to establish key priorities for our community for the coming term.”

They discussed their duties as a council, including their primary goal of representing the public interest through setting direction and making decisions for essential services to the community.

The meeting also outlined how staff’s role works with that of council’s.

After council defines formal policies and allocated finance and resources, staff then implements policies. They also provide alternatives when council is making policy decisions.
