Municipal hall is one step closer to being able to live stream council meetings after Monday night.
It’s a decision that satisfies a question raised at all-candidates meetings during the 2018 election campaign.
Council voted unanimously to sign a contract with a Kamloops software firm, ICompass, to purchase a website portal and video manager package for $4,500.
“I know there are a lot of communities that are already using it,” said deputy corporate officer Carrie Kassa. “Oliver is already using it and they are very happy with it.”
Mayor Spencer Coyne said it is uncertain when live streaming council meetings will begin. Regulations regarding privacy issues must be addressed first, he said.
The cost of the video program does not include equipment.
The software package will also allow residents to sign up for email alerts from town hall.
“The village of Keremeos uses it and it’s very successful,” said Coyne. “It’s a super effective tool to communicate and keep the population in the know…During the fire [this summer] they had emails going out regularly.”
The software is an extension of what is already being used to create council agendas, and the portal will be compatible with the town’s new website, which should be unveiled in about ten weeks.
