The Canadian Food Inspection Agency earlier this month issued a recall of products over concerns they may have been contaminated with E. Coli 0157:H7. This recall includes several ground beef products sold by Loblaw Companies Limited, which operates No Frills grocery stores, including one in Port Alberni.
No Frills carries the President’s Choice brand of food.
The list was expanded this week to include Ground Beef – Fresh in 9.07-kilogram packages. The product was initially made for Five Guys Enterprises, which runs a chain of restaurants under a similar name. Frozen versions of the same product were also sold.
Danny Crema of Port Alberni said he only found out about the beef recall when he was watching a television newscast earlier in the week. He had already cooked some President’s Choice prime rib beef burgers, but said no one in his family had gotten sick.
When he went back to the store he said they offered to replace the burgers; all the product under the recall had already been taken off the shelves, Crema said, but there weren’t signs up warning people of the recall.
“How many people still have this in their freezer,” he said.
A warning has been posted prominently on the website for the Port Alberni No Frills store, along with a link to a complete list of products.
Loblaw Companies Limited (Loblaw) is asking the public not to consume certain ground beef products because they may pose a health concern. This is in response to notice from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency who issued a national voluntary recall of a broad range of brands and products from many retailers, food services and restaurants on behalf of establishment 761, because they have concerns that these items may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
A list of impacted products sold at Loblaw banner stores is below. Loblaw stated in a press release that it has removed all lot codes of this product from sale as precautionary measure while the Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducts its investigation.
Customers can return the products to any Loblaw banner stores where the customer service desk will provide a full refund (including without receipt) or contact customer service at President’s Choice Customer Service at 1-888-495-5111 or customerservice@presidentschoice.ca.
Impacted Products:
The products impacted were manufactured by establishment 761, between July 1, 2011, and Feb. 15, 2012, and a production code between July 1, 2011, and Feb. 15, 2012, or have a five-digit lot code where the last four digits are 1831 or higher.
