Project gets third reading

A townhouse development proposal on 14 Avenue came before council Monday

A proposed 23-unit townhouse development at 14 Avenue and Bluebell Street has passed third reading by district council, despite strong opposition from neighbours.

A public hearing on the issue Monday evening had residents register concerns of noise, traffic, construction, parking, and population density with a 44-signature petition presented to council.

The architect for the proposal estimated the homes would fetch roughly $300,000 each, allaying some fears it would attract low-income renters.

Mayor James Atebe welcomed the development, saying Mission residents have moved to Abbotsford because these types of affordable developments aren’t offered here.

The townhouses will average 1,400-square-feet with double garage parking and two parking stalls per unit.

The site is being rezoned from urban residential to urban compact/multiple family to allow for the subdivision.

The development passed third reading a with vote of 5-2. Staff will now assess concerns raised during the public hearing before council votes on final approval.
