Bear season will be upon Golden shortly.
The Conservation Officer Service is reminding residents to secure their animal attractants, especially domestic waste. The Wildlife Act states that it is an offence to leave a substance that could attract bears. The Town of Golden will be fully outfitted with residential bear resistant garbage containers by May of this year.
Residents who do not have the new bin should keep garbage in a secured garage or shed.
If that option is unavailable, a heavy duty ratchet strap may be used as a temporary solution.
Residents found not using both clips on their bear resistant bin are subject to a fine of $230 for a first offence and a court appearance for subsequent infractions. It is important to note that this applies even when bears have not recently been seen in the area. In other words, bins must be secured at all times when containing garbage.
