Proposal for Clayburn Brick Plant site development

Apartments and townhouses planned for massive site near historic downtown

An application to redevelop the former home of the Clayburn Brick Plant has been submitted to council, signalling the start of what would be the historic downtown’s largest building project in decades.

Signs regarding a rezoning application recently went up at the sprawling 19-acre site. The applicant, Langley-based developer Infinity Properties Ltd., wants to build a “mixed use developing consisting of townhouses, apartments and a commercial component,” according to the signs.

The developer wants to build 273 townhouse units and 254 apartment units on seven different lots on the site, according to documents available on the city’s mapping website.

The entire property – which extends nearly to Morey Avenue in the north – is designated as suitable for midrise development in Abbotsford’s Official Community Plan (OCP).

There are currently several apartment buildings planned for the historic downtown, and officials have said they expect to see the area to see an influx of residents as new homes are built. None of the current projects, though, involve the number of units proposed for the brick plant site.

The site was home to the Clayburn Brick Plant for more than 60 years. The plant closed in 2011 and was dismantled the following year.

The property was sold in 2017 for $16 million.
