Proposal put forward to turn old Penticton coffee shop into pharmacy

Application for rezoning will go before Penticton city council this week

An application is coming to Penticton city council this week asking for a zoning amendment in a high profile area that would allow the conversion of a former coffee shop into a pharmacy.

Located on Carmi Avenue, to the north of the Penticton Regional Hospital, the property has a commercial unit on the main floor and a dwelling unit on the second storey.

The applicant is proposing to renovate the existing commercial building into a pharmacy but needs the property rezoned to mixed use commercial to allow for a retail store.

The proposal is in the city council agenda and states that the parking lot can accommodate nine vehicles but it would be relocated from existing driveway entrances along Government Street and Carmi Avenue to the lane instead.

The city engineers determined the existing driveway along Government Street should be closed due to safety concerns and the driveway along Carmi Avenue would be narrowed down to serve as an exit for vehicles leaving the site, which will also provide enhanced safety. Costs to changing the curbs, gutter and sidewalks would be charged to the developer.

According to city staff, the area is identified in the draft official community plan, that is anticipated to be adopted this spring, as commercial. They recommend that the application be forward to the June 4, 2019 public hearing for comments from the public.
