The province announced it has provided funding that will lead to 20 new childcare spaces in Nanaimo.
According to a Ministry of Children and Family Development press release, the Childcare B.C. New Spaces Fund has allowed for 16 spaces for Kids & Company and four at Nanaimo Innovation Academy.
The Kids & Company spaces are tied to a partnership with Edgewood Treatment Alternatives that will allow the addiction treatment centre to provide on-site care for children whose mothers are in treatment.
“These new child care spaces give more parents the opportunity to pursue their dreams, staying focused on their work or studies knowing their children are being well cared for by qualified ECEs in environments that place their children’s development as their top priority,” said Doug Routley, Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA, in the release.
The ministry says more than 120 affordable childcare spaces in Nanaimo have received provincial funding since the Childcare B.C. New Spaces Fund was launched in 2018. The release says the Childcare B.C. plan has helped Nanaimo parents save more than $11 million through the affordable child care benefit and child care fee reduction initiative.
